Berlin/February 2002 – The Open Group, Reading, UK,
uses for its CORBA Branding Program on the certification of
CORBA v2.3 conformant C++ and JAVA Object Request Broker (ORB)
test products by the Testing Technologies IST GmbH, Berlin.
The Open Group addresses with this branding program the increasing
importance of middleware platforms for the realisation of distributed
and embedded systems for mobile communication and E-business
solutions.
The test product was developed by FOKUS – the Fraunhofer
Institute for Open Communication Systems, Berlin – within
the EU IST project CORVAL2 and is provided as a product by
its spinoff Testing Technologies. The test product can be ordered
from Testing Technologies under the label VSOrb 2.3. VSOrb
offers exhaustive and comfortable test cases and guarantees
comparable and repeatable test results.
Object Request Brokers (ORBs) play an important role within
CORBA – the Common Object Request Broker Architecture:
in large, distributed client-server-systems, which are continuously
penetrating into the IT and telecommunication infrastructure,
ORBs are the communication medium between the different applications.
Their task is to connect various software components transparently
within global networks. With the increasing use of networking
capabilities for such systems and the growing utilization of
mobile systems, interoperability of the products is an ever
growing important factor. The Open Group took with the CORBA
Branding Program a first step into that direction.
There is no doubt on the importance of well-defined objective
tests. ORB vendors are asked to test their product. Only that
way the vision of a networked, unlimited, mobile world can
be realized for everybody.” Dr. Ina Schieferdecker, CEO
of Testing Technologies, is optimistic for the future.
Vendors and providers of ORBs can license the test suite,
which has been approved by The Open Group, together with support
and maintenance from Testing Technologies. The test results
are checked and evaluated by The Open Group and the product
will be certified. Interoperability problems of certified ORBs
can also be detected with the test tools by Testing Technologies.
About CORVAL2
Enhanced Techniques for CORBA Validation (CORVAL2) is a project
whose objective is to develop new mechanisms for conformance
testing of CORBA 2.3 technology. The total project budget
is over EUR 1.7 million, with the EC funding accounting for
about 50% of this. CORVAL2 is an EC Fifth Framework Program
project, within the Information Societies Technology (IST)
program. CORVAL2 is a 2-year project that commenced in January
2000. The project partners are The Open Group (managing partner),
Fraunhofer Fokus, Object Oriented Concepts, Fujitsu (ICL
IT Centre), Eric Leach Marketing and The Object Management
Group (OMG).
