New License Model Fosters the Broad Use of Test Tools for the Setup of Reliable and Efficient Infrastructures

TTCN-3 Tools - The Heart of Test Development Becomes FreeSource

Berlin, March, 5th 2002 - Just in time for CeBIT, the world ICT trade show for developers and users, Testing Technologies IST GmbH, Berlin gives a signal towards the testing community. The essential tool for every TTCN-3 development, the analyzer and the compiler are offered as FreeSource to the market: the TTCN-3 analysis tool TTanalyze and the TTCN-3 to Java compiler TTthree become FreeSource. With the new license model, a shift from CPU based licensing towards developer based licensing with significantly reduced prices has been performed. At the same time, all users of these products get the possibility to download the product's source code. The Berlin test tool provider reacts on the constantly growing demand from developers to evaluate the source code of the tools in order to produce company or application specific adaptations. This decision opens up the market for small and medium size companies as well as for the whole research area.

Theofanis Vassiliou-Gioles describes the change of the test market: "Our decision for FreeSource is directly connected to the growing demand of different industrial sectors towards testing of distributed and mobile systems. Considering that systematic testing of own developments was in the past a company decision, we anticipate today the interest of single developers in companies and universities in systematic testing. Testing as a strategy to setup a flexible and operating infrastructure enters the companies through the backdoor. However, a developer is a different customer than a manager. He wants to see behind-the-scenes of the technology he is using. He wants to understand every single bit. Our new license model meets the expectations of this large customer group and simultaneously supports the market for testing."

With Testing Technologies' new sales model, a user has to pay license fees that are around a quarter of the old fees. For that, he/she obtains the software sources and a premium-support service for six months provided by Testing Technologies. An evaluation license for 30 days can be obtained via registered download of the software. The sole purpose of the evaluation license is to give the user the possibility to analyze the software prior of licensing it. Any commercial use of the software requires a developer license for the individual user. For non-commercial research however, the tools are provided without additional license fees. The new license scheme does not apply to the other products or the extensive services of Testing Technologies.

In contrast to the OpenSource model, the vendor/developer of FreeSource keeps all rights on the software. He is responsible for the further development and the support and is the primary professional contact for the user. The licensee has the certainty that the product will be constantly enhanced and supported. At the same time, he/she has the possibility to evaluate and use the software to the maximum extend, if desired.
