Dramatic Efficiency Increase with TTCN-3 Load Testing

July 2, 2008
Zurich (Switzerland) / Berlin (Germany)

Advanced TTCN-3 load testing capabilities of the Nexus Telecom Nexus8610 high-capacity load-test system will enable a dramatic increase in testing efficiency for telecom equipment manufacturers. A strategic technology partnership between Testing Technologies and Nexus Telecom enables TTCN-3-based load testing for all telecom technologies.

Enabling load testing for TTCN-3 settings and message flows creates a new method for telecommunication testing. The possibility of Nexus8610 re-using thousands of function test cases written in TTCN-3 will significantly shorten the duration of the powerful last load testing test cycle. Moreover, using developers' existing and proven test cases will dramatically increase the quality of testing performed.

Major manufacturers, such as Alcatel-Lucent, Nokia Siemens Networks, Ericsson, Huawei, and many others, maintain large libraries of several thousand TTCN-3 test cases for conformance tests. These existing test cases can now be re-used seamlessly for load and stress testing. By applying proven and error-free test cases from earlier conformance test cycles for the important load-test cycle, the efficiency in testing departments of telecom equipment manufacturers will dramatically increase. The partnership between Nexus Telecom and Testing Technologies is the driver for this revolution in load testing networks and/or individual network elements. Nexus8610's market strength in load and stress testing combined with Testing Technologies' expertise in TTCN-3 is the perfect match leading to this breakthrough for telecom service testing laboratories.

TTCN-3 is a well established Test Notation, continuously developed by ETSI. It is used to define a wide set of conformance and functions tests on various telecom technologies. The partnership with Testing Technologies ensures that the Nexus8610 language implementation is compliant with the latest TTCN-3 standards.

Nexus8610 strengthens its leading role in load testing by making use of TTCN-3 instead of its proven proprietary language to write test cases. By performing conformance test call simulations, Nexus8610 models real traffic used to observe the behavior of the control- and user-plane interface systems under test (SUT) under various changing conditions. Full testing functionality is provided, covering a wide range of call scenarios, from basic calls to complex call scenarios, including interworking between different technologies and manufacturers, as well as supplementary services.

"The re-use of proven TTCN-3 test cases for massive load testing is a breakthrough and will further improve Nexus8610 customer abilities to shorten test cycles, thus improving time-to-market significantly," says Christoph Kupper, VP of Marketing at Nexus Telecom, Switzerland. "Furthermore, the ability to conduct TTCN-3 conformance tests on the same equipment will reduce CAPEX on the test environment and infrastructure, and will be a major benefit to equipment manufacturers who will be able to bring their developer knowledge and skills seamlessly and directly into the test labs to speed up and improve the quality of testing on new services and functionality. Reducing time-to-market is a key asset in today's quickly evolving telecom environment. Being first in the market is the key to gaining market share and maintaining revenue streams. The partnership between Nexus Telecom and Testing Technologies is fulfilling a major Nexus8610 customer request: Seamless TTCN-3 conformance and load testing."

"It is obvious that more and more companies recognize the benefits of standards-based testing with TTCN-3," says Stephan Pietsch, CTO of Testing Technologies. "With this powerful test technology, efficient and economic testing has become reality. Our TTCN-3-based test tools and solutions contribute to assuring high product and service quality in a wide range of application areas and domains. We are pleased to partner with Nexus, bringing an innovative product for TTCN-3-based load testing to market."
